How To Set Up An Etsy Shop (From Scratch)
If you’re serious about learning how to set up an Etsy shop, but a little overwhelmed by how to get started or what you need to do to get the ball rolling…worry not! Understanding how to start an Etsy shop doesn’t have to require a years of experience or a web design mastermind. (Or even any craft experience at all.)
Just following a few simple, step-by-step procedures. (All of which my 72-year-old mom could figure out. And if she can figure it out…so can you!)
So, here is a quick down and dirty guide to set up an Etsy shop for the technically challenged.
How to Set Up an Etsy Shop (From Scratch) Step #1: Determine your products
Ultimately, while you can make and sell almost anything on Etsy, your first step towards learning how to set up an Etsy shop is going to involve choosing and focusing on a handful of complementary products.
Start by assessing your creative strengths. (Or ability to delegate really well.) And come up with 1 or 2 flagship Etsy products you can start with and then go from there.
How To Set Up An Etsy Shop (From Scratch) Step #2: Determine pricing
When it comes to understanding how to start an Etsy shop, pricing is vital. Most Etsians price products according to the time/money spent creating the products.
This is a big no-no.
You are not selling products in a vacuum. You are in a competitive marketplace. Instead, find that comfortable middle range where similar products are priced. (And dip just below.)
You can always raise your prices later. (When you’ve built a brand.)
How To Set Up An Etsy Shop (From Scratch) Step #3: Establish your inventory
Before you ever open your Etsy shop up for business, make sure you’re going to have enough product, just in case the demand is strong right out of the gate. I know this sounds like it may not happen. But trust me, the worst thing to do is to sell product that you can’t fulfill. (I think having enough to create 50-100 creations is usually pretty good.)
How To Set Up An Etsy Shop (From Scratch) #4: Set up the account
The registration process for Etsy is remarkably straightforward. Keep in mind that the site will start you out as a buyer. You will need to:
- Switch over to a seller account
- Click on “add new item” from the “Your Etsy” tab
- Upload photos (crop them beforehand)
- Enticing product title (With keywords)
- Writing compelling descriptions (Always go for benefits over features. How will your creation LOOK? Now what’s the thread count.)
How To Set Up An Etsy Shop (From Scratch) Step #5: Establish a shipping process
This is really all about using the proper packaging materials. For shipping costs, create an average based on a zip code that’s halfway across the country from your current location. (And depending on where you are, establish if you’re willing to ship abroad.)
Most customers will be flexible with you, if you communicate.
How To Set Up An Etsy Shop (From Scratch) Step #6: Promote the heck out of your products
If you’ve got any social media or email list database…use it! Let everyone you know about your creations. And don’t worry if you don’t think your friends and family will want to buy. They’ll share it with somebody else who does.
And before you know it you’ll be in the Etsy top seller list!
